History of the AST
Peter Harvey, director of Hohliebi Programs in Lenk,
Switzerland, the site of the Alpine Summer Term, envisioned a summer
outdoor education opportunity that would utilize the existing
facilities of his educational programs for young people.
Sarah Apgar Smith founded TrailSmiths Outdoor Education last year with a
vision to design custom leadership programs for teenagers. She
formed a close link with Peter and Hohliebi after attending the
Winter Term program in 1993 and teaching there in 2007 upon completing her Army
commitment.
The two educators jointly conceived the AST to offer
high school students a unique outdoor leadership program encompassing
the best aspects of intensive wilderness schools, summer camps and cultural experiences in one institution.
Together they are launching the Alpine Summer Term in July 2009 and offer the experience to teenagers
worldwide.
